Overview

Based on a deliciously strange-but-true story, Melissa McCarthy stars as Lee Israel, a struggling, hermetic author in early 90s New York. Known mostly for writing biographies of the semi-famous, she finds herself in need of a new career when her acid-tongue, grizzled demeanour and penchant for drinking at her desk get her booted from her latest job. She begins to forge letters from literary stars like Dorothy Parker and Noel Coward in order to keep her rent paid and her ability to not just capture their wit but enhance it leads to a booming business. As Lee begins to open up just a little, spending her days drinking at a gay bar with her closest friend (a down-and-out but dapper Richard E. Grant) and striking up a new relationship with an intrigued book-seller (Dolly Wells), the whole charade becomes unmanageable. And then the FBI get involved.

★★★★ "Charming and melancholic. McCarthy delivers some of her best work yet."
— The Guardian
"A fiercely composed, historically informed, and richly textured film."
— The New Yorker
★★★★ "A powerhouse showcase for Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant."
— Time Out

Why You Should See This Film

Easily one of the best films of the year, Can You Ever Forgive Me? features fully-formed, empathetic performances from McCarthy and Grant who capture that special dynamic between a caustically droll lesbian and her quick-witted gay best friend brilliantly. Directed by Marielle Heller (Diary of a Teenage Girl) and co-written by Nicole Holofcener (Enough Said, Friends with Money) based on Lee Israel's best-selling 2008 memoir, this film shines a light on a loneliness not often seen on screen, and handles the time period with humour and warmth.
