Straight-A students Molly (Beanie Feldstein) and Amy (Kaitlyn Dever) are high-achieving BFFS and social pariahs. Fuelled by a shared ambition for their lives post high school, they’ve been too busy planning for illustrious and well-meaning careers to enjoy any of the reckless teen fun that’s been surrounding them. When they realise the day before graduation that their study / life balance is all out of whack, they waste no time seeking out elaborate hijinks, embarking on a string of wild adventures, all while trying to stay true to themselves.
Why You Should See This Film
An epic high school romp, Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart is an instant teen classic, and very much not just for teen audiences. There are queer main characters, the cast is diverse, and the story is surprising – truly a comedy for 2019. Featuring infectiously charismatic performances from Feldstein and Dever (and yes, the former is Jonah Hill’s sister), the whole cast is riddled with comedy chops – from the inimitable Lisa Kudrow and Billie Lourd (American Horror Story, Star Wars, Carrie Fisher’s daughter) to a whole string of dazzling young newcomers playing minor characters so entertaining that they could all have spin-offs.
