The wild imaginations of Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze come together in this completely nuts and totally entertaining trip that remains one of the very best films of the 90s. John Cusack and Cameron Diaz (both sporting particularly unkempt hairdos) play Craig and Lotte Schwartz. He’s a puppeteer and she’s a pet store clerk with a menagerie of pets at home. Craig takes a job as a filing clerk on the 7½ floor at Lestercorp to make some extra money. There, behind a filing cabinet, Craig finds a small door, which he discovers is a portal leading into the mind of actor John Malkovich. When he lets his attractive co-worker Maxine (Catherine Keener) in on the secret, she comes up with a plan to exploit the portal and charge people hundreds of dollars for the experience. Craig, Maxine and Lotte become obsessed with the portal and things soon spiral out of control.
Being John Malkovich really catapulted Spike Jonze’s career. Before the film he was known as a music video director having made videos for Björk, Dinosaur Jr., Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim. As fate would have it, Kaufman had sent his script for Being John Malkovich on to Francis Ford Coppola, hoping to find a producer. Coppola, Jonze’s father-in-law at the time, passed it on to him and three years later, Jonze earned himself an Oscar nomination for the work. It was also nominated for Best Original Screenplay (Kaufman) and Best Supporting Actress (Keener). Keep an eye out for blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameos by Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, David Fincher, Winona Ryder, Andy Dick and the members of Hanson.
We’re happy to be holding this screening of Being John Malkovich on John Malkovich’s birthday.
