Overview

In this heartwarming, delightfully unpredictable true story from director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?), jaded investigative journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) has been assigned a profile of wholesome TV personality Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks). Initially filled with skepticism due to Rogers’ impossibly kind nature, Vogel’s cynical exterior is gradually worn away by his subject’s endless capacity for warmth and plain decency. Moved to reconcile with his own painful past, the reporter finds much more than he bargained for in just a few days spent with America's most beloved neighbour.

"A nuanced, formally playful delight, a perfectly pitched and played ode to goodness. All hail Marielle Heller"
— Empire
"Surprisingly moving ... A really entertaining and touching film"
— The Guardian
"For those seeking comfort, kindness and a sense of cherishing in a turbulent world ... Surrender to it and bring tissues"
— Total Film

Why You Should See This Film

Far from your typical biopic, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a cheerful and surprisingly emotional study in human empathy arriving at just the right time in our fractured era. Constructed almost like an episode of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood itself, and nominated for Best Supporting Actor at this year’s Academy Awards, it follows in the footsteps of last year’s similarly celebrated documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, with visionary director Marielle Heller lending a generous dose of whimsy, dark humour and cinematic gut punches that seem to come out of nowhere.
