Overview

From Oscar-winning writer/director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) comes a timeless, transcendent romance told amid unjust tragedy. Adapted from the classic novel by James Baldwin, If Beale Street Could Talk tells the story of childhood friends Tish (KiKi Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James) as they fall in love, get engaged and subsequently fall pregnant. Dreaming of a future together and counselled by loving family members (including a radiant, Oscar-nominated Regina King), the couple’s plans are derailed when Fonny is wrongly accused of a terrible crime. While her imprisoned lover awaits trial, Tish must summon the strength to carry on and preserve their unbreakable bond.

"A magnificent love story ... in all its gorgeous romantic melancholy and sublimated outrage."
— The Telegraph UK
"It’s the sort of cinema that feels steeped in the past, completely of the moment and timeless all at once."
— Rolling Stone
"Barry Jenkins is a painter of emotional landscapes with few equals."
— Time Out

Why You Should See This Film

With his signature flair for poetic cinematography and expressive light, Jenkins manages to honour — and even build upon — the beautiful words of Baldwin as he explores racial bias, incarceration, unconditional love and familial bonds with lyrical intimacy. Featuring a staggering central performance from newcomer Layne and a gorgeous Oscar-nominated score from Nicholas Britell, If Beale Street Could Talk is a delicate, electrically alive film bursting with lush colour and warm optimism.
