Overview

Featuring a mesmerising (and deservedly Oscar-nominated) virtuoso turn from Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate is a glorious portrait of Vincent van Gogh’s tumultuous final days. Directed and co-written by Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), this radiantly shot biopic enters the mind of a cultural icon, unravelling more than a century of cultural folklore to reveal the troubled man within. Living in self-imposed exile in Provence, Van Gogh (Dafoe) develops his unique painting style while grappling with crises of religion, mental illness and fractured relationships with his brother Theo (Rupert Friend), rivalrous artist Paul Gaugain (Oscar Isaac) and attentive doctor Paul Gachet (Mathieu Amalric).

"Stars Willem Dafoe in a monumental, career-best performance that lets us feel we're living Van Gogh's life and not just watching it.
— Rolling Stone
Winner: Best Actor, Venice Film Festival
"Schnabel has made not just an exquisite film but an argument for art."
— The New York Times

Why You Should See This Film

Structured as more of a collection of impressionistic vignettes than a forensic biopic, At Eternity’s Gate brings Van Gogh’s signature aesthetic to the realm of cinema — all dappled light, fleeting visions, farmland tableaux and golden warmth. Both tragic and visually ecstatic, Schnabel has crafted another yet immersive tale of artistry overflowing beyond expected boundaries.
