Overview

Mikey Madison is Anora, or Ani for short, in Sean Baker’s (Tangerine, The Florida Project) highly acclaimed, Palme d'Or winning, modern American fairytale. A sex worker from Brooklyn, Ani hits the jackpot when she crosses paths with Vanya Zakharov (Mark Eydelshteyn), the spoiled playboy son of a Russian oligarch. Not long after agreeing upon an exclusive contract, the two elope to Las Vegas. But once word reaches Russia, Vanya’s parents send their cronies over to New York to annul the marriage and tear apart Ani’s Cinderella story.

Nothing short of pure movie magic

Baker shoots and choreographs like a punk Cassavetes, toying with dynamics, colours and textures while always creating chunky knots of overlapping dialogue in a bid to heighten tensions to breaking point and beyond

Why You Should See This Film

Brimming with awards season buzz after winning big at Cannes, where it received a 7½ minute standing ovation, the thrilling, hilarious, beautiful and spellbinding Anora deserves all the accolades thrown at it. Mikey Madison is nothing short of tremendous; a fearsome and flawed heroine who asserts whats best for her, finding the angles of every situation as she carries herself with irresistible momentum and magnetism. Continuing his mission of de-stigmatising sex work with great stories about sex workers, Sean Baker has perhaps made his best picture yet with an electric cast of characters, incredible set-pieces and a wild energy thats impossible to shake.
