Overview

Anomalisa is a stop-motion animation film from the mind responsible for Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation. Michael Stone (voiced by David Thewlis) is a motivational speaker on customer service techniques who sees every person in the world around him – including his wife and son – as having the same generic white male face (all voiced by Tom Noonan). Michael flies to Cincinnati for a night to present one of his talks. In the hotel, he suddenly hears a different voice, a woman’s, in a nearby room. He investigates the voice and meets Lisa (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who is staying in the hotel to attend Michael’s seminar. Fascinated by her, Michael is determined to get to know this woman who is different to anybody he has meet before. An anomaly. Anomalisa.

Why You Should See This Film

Writer and co-director Charlie Kaufman originally wrote Anomalisa as a stage play in 2005. Enlisting the help of co-director and animator Duke Johnson (who won an Emmy for a stop-motion episode of Community) and a thousand or so Kickstarter backers, Kaufman has now given new life to Anomalisa as a film. It’s thought provoking, heartbreaking, lonely, tender, expressive and uniquely human – despite being acted entirely by puppets. It was nominated an academy award and won the Grand Jury Prize at Venice.
