From the gnarly talents of Evil Dead remake and Don’t Breathe director Fede Álvarez, Alien: Romulus takes the long-running series back to its roots, this time facing Cailee Spaeny against the most terrifying life form in the universe. Desperate to escape their oppressive mining planet to start anew on a faraway independent colony, Rain (Spaeny) and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson) join a ragtag group of young scavengers raiding a derelict spacecraft of its cryostasis chambers. Upon arrival, they uncover the dark secrets of this science station and come to realise they are not alone.
“Thrillingly gruesome... The taut set pieces are so dynamic, the tension so stickily uncomfortable”
“Relying on practical rather than digital effects, Álvarez makes the xenomorphs as nightmarish as they ever have been”
“An intense, stressful delight... officially, the third-best film in the series”
Approved by both Ridley Scott and James Cameron, Alien: Romulus lives up to its predecessors with a reverence for the series, a cast of fresh blood and lots of goopy practical effects and animatronics (the sets are fantastic too!). Álvarez unrelentingly channels the edge-of-your-seat suspense and no holds barred nastiness of his previous films into the Alien universe tremendously; utilising space madness, technological terror and biological horror in thrilling new inventive ways. In our book, Romulus thoroughly succeeds in making space terrifying again.
