Overview

An affectionate slice of contemplative sci-fi, After Yang is the latest critically acclaimed film from Columbus director Kogonada. In the near future, Jake (Colin Farrell) and Kyra (Jodie Turner-Smith) raise their adoptive daughter Mika (Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja) with the help of an android babysitter, Yang (Justin H. Min). When Yang suddenly malfunctions, Jake is advised to find a replacement for his ‘techno-sapien’. Not wanting to upset Mika, Jake resorts to a cheap repairman who extracts Yang’s memory bank, a series of moments deemed important by Yang. Viewing his family through other eyes, realising the distance between one another and learning that Yang led a previous life, Jake sets out to find Yang’s original owners to save his robotic family member.

Why You Should See This Film

Based on a short story by Alexander Weinstein, led by a tender cast including a stunningly subdued Colin Farrell, After Yang raises hefty existential questions while embracing you in its deeply human, familial warmth. Taking a few formal notes from Ozu, nurtured by a soothing score from Aska Matsumiya (Skate Kitchen) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence), writer-director-editor-essayist Kogonada (Columbus) crafts a gentle, wistful meditation that will leave you teary-eyed with much to ponder.
